Chabad
Lubavitch in Hungary
Chabad-Lubavitch
of Hungary was founded in 1989 as a branch of
the worldwide Chabad
-Lubavitch movement, under the leadership
of the Lubavitcher
Rebbe. Since its inception, Chabad-Lubavitch
of Hungary has been constantly expanding and creating
new programs. From the Bét Menáchem
School to the Egység
newsletter to our social services, we reach out
to young and old alike in an effort to rekindle
the flame of Jewish life in Hungary.
The
education of Jewish children and youth
is vital to ensuring a Jewish future. The Bét
Menáchem school, which includes a preschool,
kindergarten, and elementary school up to
grade 6, is the only one of its kind in the country.
The school provides an outstanding education in
Jewish studies as well as a superior secular education
in collaboration with one of Hungary's best primary
schools, the Radnóti Miklós (Gyakorló)
School. Bet Menachem serves children from
all backgrounds and levels of observance and includes
students from Hungarian-, Hebrew-, and English-speaking
families.
Other
children's activities sponsored by Lubavitch include
hands-on workshops like the Shofar Factory
and the Model Matzah Bakery and holiday
programs such as the Purim Masquerade Party.
We also offer a Sunday school, conducted
in English and Hungarian, for students ages six
to ten, as well as bar/bat mitzvah lessons.
During the summer, we continue providing children
with a fun Jewish atmosphere through the Gan
Israel summer camp.
In
1998, the Pesti
Yeshiva opened it doors, offering an opportunity
for advanced traditional Judaic studies that has
not existed for nearly sixty years. The Yeshiva
serves both rabbinical students from overseas,
who come for a year-long study program, and local
young people eager to expand their knowledge of
Torah, Talmud, and Jewish law and philosophy.
Students can also take advantage of the one-on-one
study program to explore topics of interest.
For
university students and anyone else interested
in a taste of the yeshiva experience, the annual
Yeshivacation provides a unique opportunity. This two-week,
full-time study program offers an introduction
to Jewish studies in a lively, interactive environment.
In a more informal setting, local students will
also find Lubavitch at our Jewish
tent at the "Civil Sziget" music festival,
where we offer a week-long program of classes
and activities.
While
educating the young is one of our major priorities,
adult education is an important part of
our program as well. Weekly classes on a wide
range of topics-Hebrew, Jewish mysticism, Talmud,
the role of the Jewish woman, and more-provide
a great way to get involved and explore your Jewish
heritage.
On
Shabbat, our activities are centered in the Vasvári
Pál street Chabad synagogue. Traditional
Friday night services are followed by the
Shabbat meal, hosted by the yeshiva students and
accompanied by plenty of song and discussion.
Saturday morning services follow the next
day. Special holiday programs, like the communal
Passover seder and the public Chanukah
menorah lighting, are held throughout the
year.
We
bring the holiday spirit directly to thousands
of Jewish homes through the Egység
newsletter, which features articles on
a variety of other topics as well. The Egység
is only one of our many publications. Through
our publishing house,
we have translated into modern Hungarian and printed
numerous classic texts, including the prayer book,
the Pentateuch, and the Passover
Hagaddah.
Through
our network of social services and charitable
activities, we reach out to people in need. We
sponsor nursing home and hospital visitation programs,
bringing Jewish warmth and camaraderie to the
elderly. We offer school scholarships, and provide
funds for college students and young people preparing
to be married. The needs of Jewish prisoners
are also addressed through our holiday and
counseling programs in the prisons.
In
the coming years, we hope to continue to expand
our programs. We hope to plan much-needed activities-social
events, seminars, synagogue services for the local
English-speaking Jewish population. We look forward
to building a new, attractive women's mikvah and,
eventually, a building which will host all of
our activities. We are currently in the process
of establishing the Hungarian chapter of Tzivos
Hashem, a worldwide Jewish children's organization.
We would also like to organize a Jewish children's
library and plan a concert. We hope you will help
us in working to reach these goals, which will
only be possible with your assistance and generosity.
So
come join us, study an ancient text or ask a new
question at one of our classes, lend a hand as
we help those in need. Together, we can make Hungary
flourishing center of Jewish life and learning
once again.
